This would be semantically faithful but would opt out of one of Rust's major performance advantages. Alternatively, it could embrace ownership transfer for its performance benefits, accepting that this represents a deviation from the pure "share nothing" model and may require more careful consideration of data lifetimes.
4.4 Fault Tolerance: Replicating OTP Supervision Trees in Rust¶
In OTP, supervision is a set of runtime primitives. Processes can be "linked," meaning a crash in one will propagate a kill signal to the other. Supervisors use "monitors" to receive notifications when a child process dies.3 These are low-level mechanisms upon which the supervision tree pattern is built.
In Rust, frameworks like Bastion and Riker implement supervision as a library pattern on top of the async runtime.27 A supervisor actor spawns child actors as async tasks and holds onto their
JoinHandle. It can then poll these handles or use channels to be notified when a task panics or exits with an error. This works, but it is an abstraction layer built by the framework.
A true BEAM-like runtime in Rust would need to integrate these concepts more deeply. The runtime's internal process registry would need to track the links and monitor relationships between processes. The scheduler would need to understand this hierarchy to correctly propagate exit signals and execute the restart strategies defined by the supervisor. This requires making supervision a first-class citizen of the runtime, not just an application-level pattern.
4.5 The Hot Code Loading Challenge in a Statically Compiled Language¶
Hot code loading is perhaps the most difficult BEAM feature to replicate in a statically compiled language like Rust.13 The BEAM achieves this by having a module loader that can replace the code for a given module at runtime.
The only viable mechanism for this in Rust is dynamic loading of shared libraries (.so, .dll, .dylib).48 However, this approach is fraught with challenges:
- Unstable ABI: Rust does not have a stable Application Binary Interface (ABI). This means that code compiled with one version of the Rust compiler may not be compatible with code compiled with another. To ensure compatibility between the main application and a dynamically loaded library, all exported functions must use the C ABI (
extern "C") and avoid complex Rust types in their signatures.50 - State Migration: This is the most significant hurdle. When a new version of a library is loaded, any existing state from the old version must be carefully migrated. This typically involves serializing the state to a stable format (like JSON or protobuf) before the old library is unloaded, and then deserializing it in the new library.52 This process is manual, complex, and a potential source of bugs.
- Safety: Interacting with dynamic libraries in Rust is inherently
unsafe. The compiler cannot verify the correctness of the function signatures, and improper handling of library handles can lead to dangling pointers or memory leaks.49
Replicating the seamlessness of BEAM's hot code loading is likely impossible. A practical Rust implementation would be much more constrained. A more promising, though still complex, avenue is the one offered by Wasm-based runtimes like Lunatic, which can load and instantiate new Wasm modules at runtime, potentially offering a safer and more manageable approach to dynamic code updates.55
V. A Practical Roadmap for Implementation¶
Translating the preceding analysis into a concrete implementation requires a phased approach, beginning with foundational architectural decisions and progressively building towards the more advanced features of a BEAM-like system. This roadmap outlines a logical sequence of development, highlighting the critical choices at each stage.
5.1 Key Architectural Decisions and Their Trade-offs¶
Before writing the first line of code, four fundamental architectural decisions must be made. These choices are deeply interconnected and will define the core character and capabilities of the final runtime.
- Decision 1: Scheduling Model (Preemptive vs. Cooperative). This is the most critical choice.
- Cooperative (Tokio-based): Pros: Simpler to implement, leverages the mature Tokio ecosystem, high throughput for I/O-bound tasks. Cons: Sacrifices fairness and responsiveness guarantees, vulnerable to blocking by CPU-bound tasks, a significant deviation from the BEAM's core behavior.
- Preemptive (Custom or Wasm-based): Pros: Achieves BEAM-like fairness and soft real-time behavior, robust against misbehaving processes. Cons: Far more complex to implement, requires either building a custom executor from scratch or integrating and managing a Wasm runtime like Wasmtime. This is the recommended path for a runtime that is truly BEAM-inspired.
- Decision 2: Process Isolation Model (Logical vs. Hard).
- Logical (Rust Ownership): Pros: Idiomatic Rust, zero-cost abstraction, high performance. Cons: Provides logical, not physical, memory isolation. A bug in
unsafecode can still compromise the entire system. - Hard (Wasm/OS Process): Pros: Provides strong, BEAM-like memory isolation. Failures are completely contained. Cons: Introduces performance overhead and the complexity of managing a Wasm runtime or OS processes. The Wasm approach is the most promising for replicating BEAM's model of lightweight, isolated processes.
- Decision 3: Message Passing Semantics (Move vs. Clone).
- Move (Ownership Transfer): Pros: Zero-copy, highly performant, idiomatic Rust. Cons: Deviates from the BEAM's "share nothing" by copying, creates stronger coupling between components.
- Clone (Copy-on-Send): Pros: Semantically identical to the BEAM's default, ensures complete decoupling. Cons: Incurs performance overhead for cloning messages, less idiomatic for Rust performance patterns.
- Decision 4: Supervision Integration (Library vs. Primitive).
- Library Pattern: Pros: Simpler to implement initially, decouples application logic from runtime internals. Cons: Less powerful, the runtime is not "aware" of the supervision hierarchy, limiting potential optimizations and deep integration.
- Runtime Primitive: Pros: A true replication of the OTP model, enables the scheduler to be aware of process links and monitors, allows for a more robust and integrated fault-tolerance system. Cons: More complex, requires tight coupling between the process management, scheduling, and supervision components.
5. Implementation Phases¶
5.1 Core Runtime, Executor, and Scheduler¶
The first phase focuses on establishing the absolute core of the runtime: the ability to schedule and execute tasks.
- Define the
RuntimeStruct: This will be the main entry point and container for the system, holding the scheduler, process registry, and other global state. - Implement the Scheduler: Based on Decision 1, implement the chosen scheduler.
- If preemptive, this involves integrating a Wasm runtime like
wasmtimeand building the logic to instantiate, run, and pause Wasm modules. The scheduler will manage a pool of OS threads and a run queue of ready-to-run Wasm instances. - If cooperative, this involves creating a wrapper around a
tokio::runtime::Runtimeand itsHandle. - Implement Run Queues and Load Balancing: Each scheduler thread should have its own run queue. Implement the logic for tasks to be added to these queues and for the scheduler to pull from them. If building for multi-core, implement a work-stealing or process-migration strategy to balance load across schedulers.17
5.2 Lightweight Processes and Message Passing Infrastructure¶
This phase introduces the core abstractions of the actor model: processes and messages.
- Define the Process Control Block (PCB): Create a Rust struct to represent an Erlang PCB.13 This will hold all metadata for a process, including its unique Process ID (PID), its current status (e.g., running, waiting, exiting), a pointer to its mailbox, its reduction count, and references to its parent/supervisor and linked processes.
- Implement Process Spawning: Create the
spawnandspawn_linkfunctions. These functions will allocate a new PCB, create the initial process state (including its Wasm instance or async task), and place it in a scheduler's run queue. - Design the Mailbox: Implement the data structure for the process mailbox. A lock-free, multi-producer, single-consumer queue (e.g., from the
crossbeam-channelcrate) is a suitable choice. A decision must be made whether the mailboxes will be bounded (providing back-pressure) or unbounded. - Implement Message Passing Primitives: Implement the
sendfunction. This will involve locating the target process's PCB via its PID, and enqueuing the message into its mailbox. The implementation must adhere to the copy/move semantics chosen in Decision 3.
5.3 Memory Management and Garbage Collection Strategy¶
This phase is only necessary if pursuing the hard isolation model with per-process heaps, as the logical isolation model would rely on Rust's global allocator.
- Implement a Heap Allocator: If using a Wasm runtime, this is largely handled by the Wasm instance's linear memory. If building a custom non-Wasm runtime with per-process heaps, this phase requires implementing a memory allocator that can create and manage distinct memory regions for each process.
- Implement a Garbage Collector: Start with a simple, correct GC algorithm. A Cheney's two-space copying collector is a classic and well-understood choice for functional languages.19
- Integrate GC with the Runtime: The GC needs to be triggered at appropriate times. This could be when a process's heap allocator fails to satisfy a request. The process would be suspended, the GC would run on its heap, and then the process would be rescheduled. The root set for the GC would be the process's stack and registers.19
5.4 Advanced Features - Supervision, Distribution, and Dynamic Code Reloading¶
With the core runtime in place, the advanced features that define the Erlang/OTP experience can be built.
- Supervision: Implement the low-level primitives for linking and monitoring processes within the runtime's process registry. When a process crashes, the runtime should be able to identify its supervisor and send it a notification message. Then, implement the
Supervisorbehavior itself, with the logic for parsing restart strategies and managing child processes. - Distribution: Design the internode protocol. This involves defining how Erlang terms will be serialized for the wire (e.g., using the External Term Format) and choosing a transport (e.g., QUIC, as used by Lunatic, or TCP).39 Implement a global process registry (or a distributed hash table) to map PIDs to node locations and a proxying mechanism to transparently forward messages to remote processes.
- Dynamic Code Reloading: This is the most challenging feature.
- Implement a module loader using a crate like
libloading.56 - Define a stable C ABI for all functions that are intended to be reloadable. This interface must be minimal and use only C-compatible types.
- Develop a robust state-migration protocol. This requires defining a
code_changecallback that allows a process to receive its old state, transform it, and initialize its new state before the old code module is unloaded. This process is inherentlyunsafeand requires meticulous management of library handles and state serialization.52
Conclusion: The Path to a Production-Ready Erlang Runtime in Rust¶
The endeavor to build an Erlang-inspired runtime in Rust is a significant systems engineering challenge that sits at the intersection of two powerful but philosophically distinct technologies. A direct, feature-for-feature clone of the BEAM is a monumental task, particularly with respect to its seamless hot code loading capabilities. However, a runtime that successfully captures the BEAM's core principles—massive concurrency through lightweight processes, strong fault isolation, and resilient application architecture through supervision—is a viable and immensely valuable project.
The critical path to success lies in making informed architectural decisions at the outset, particularly regarding the choice between a cooperative and a preemptive scheduling model. While leveraging the existing Tokio ecosystem is tempting for its simplicity and maturity, a true BEAM-like system demands the fairness and responsiveness guarantees that only preemption can provide. The novel approach taken by the Lunatic project, using WebAssembly as a sandboxed, preemptible execution target, presents the most promising path forward for achieving BEAM's strongest guarantees in a Rust environment.
By carefully navigating these trade-offs and following a phased implementation plan, it is possible to create a new class of runtime: one that combines the raw performance and compile-time memory safety of Rust with the architectural wisdom of Erlang for building scalable, resilient, and long-running systems. The result would not be merely a clone, but a powerful synthesis that stands on its own merits, inspired by one of the most robust runtimes ever created, and built with one of the most powerful systems languages of the modern era.
